BRC Engages Black Communities Across Illinois on Race Data Categories and Representation

Black Researchers Collective
Black Researchers Collective is a Chicago-based capacity-building collective taking research to the streets.
Project overview:
Black Researchers Collective will host a series of townhalls across Illinois to capture perspectives from Black communities across different Illinois regions to understand their views on the existing race and ethnicity categories used by Illinois agencies under 20 ILCS 65/20-15 Illinois and the updated federal race and ethnicities data categorizations, exploring how these representations may support or not fully represent our communities’ needs and historical contexts. BRC will capture video discussions from town halls to create a public-facing three-part video series. BRC will also conduct a thorough analysis of Illinois bill 20 ILCS 65/20-15 on data governance and racial justice and produce a policy brief based on government and community insights.
